The memory of a former teacher dedicated to school sports will live on through a memorial trust to help thousands of children in the Bradford district.
Dot Mainwaring, a stalwart of Ben Rhydding Ladies Hockey Club, died aged 52 at her home in Heaton, Bradford, the day before she was set to have treatment on an inoperable brain tumour.
Now her husband, Alan, has set up the Dot Mainwaring Foundation to promote youth sport and carry on the work the former deputy headteacher dedicated her life to.
The fund will offer small grants and organise projects with schools and sports clubs around Bradford, Shipley, Bingley and Keighley, to promote sports such as hockey and mountaineering.
Dot was a member of Ben Rhydding Ladies Hockey Club for 30 years.
Mr Mainwaring, 57, of Duchy Drive, Heaton, said: “Dot was always passionate about getting children involved with physical education and passionate that everyone should take part, irrespective of their ability.
“She was a deputy headteacher but she came out of college as a PE specialist and never relinquished that.
“The charity is to continue the work Dot might have been involved with had she still been with us.”
He has approached leaders at the Aire Valley School Sports Partnership (AVSSP) – an organisation his wife was involved with – to identify sports activities which would benefit through the funding.
They may include netball, hockey, squash, racquetball, tennis, badminton and mountaineering – all sports Mrs Mainwaring took part in.
Funding is initially expected to be made available to youngsters in the seven secondary schools and 26 primary schools involved in the AVSSP.
Mrs Mainwaring, a PE specialist and deputy head at Sandal Primary School in Baildon, suffered a stroke in early February.
At her funeral at St Barnabas Church, Heaton, and in the days that followed it, hundreds of well-wishers gave ÂŁ3,700 for the charity.
Mrs Mainwaring taught generations of Baildon children during a 30-year career in education, and as well as being a member of Ben Rhydding Ladies’ Hockey Club she played squash regularly at Heaton Tennis and Squash Club.
