Outdoor Learning at Sandal Primary

In the woods, you can expect to find Miss Yates and Mr Haywood. We are your outdoor learning teachers. We are both passionate outdoors enthusiasts and hope to ignite a similar love and zest for the outdoors in our children. We are so very lucky to have a woodland as well as an outdoor learning classroom at our school.

At Sandal,  we have the most beautiful grounds. Our view regularly includes stunning sunsets, clear sunrises and the fog filling Bradford Vale- as well as everything in between!

We have various outdoor areas, including: a woodland, the chicken coop, huge sports fields, the wild flower maze, tennis courts, a sensory garden, an allotment, the orchard, a small copse and our beautiful pond. We are developing outdoor music, a herb garden and hope to include a bee hive.

We have so many animals that choose to make our grounds their home. We have nesting birds, hedgehogs, rabbits and foxes. The children learn about habitats and life cycles daily.

Our allotment area enables us to grow a range of food. The children plant seeds, tend and pick these. This gives them a great knowledge of the plants themselves but also about where our food comes from. In addition, it teaches: teamwork, resilience and delayed gratification.

The fireside allows for debate, cooking, singing and socialising. As well as practical skills to do with food prep and safety.

We have a clear progression of skills that we use with the children. This  enables them to learn practical skills and experience a real sense of accomplishment.

We're out in all weathers. There's no such thing as bad weather, just poor clothing choices. We have bank of outdoor clothing that enables us to do this.

Our VIP area includes our hand reared chickens. They are successful layers that teach our children about empathy, life-cycles and food.

We play lots of team building games to enhance our sense community and belonging.

Tool work is encouraged and carefully planned so that the children are safe but also ambitious, experience success and learn new skills.

Our chickens are great for regulation. You'll often find children chatting away and the chicken clucking right back at them!

All creatures big and small are appreciated and taught about. This helps the children foster a wonder and care for the environment. They also are encouraged to be mindful and utilise the art of noticing.

Mud glorious mud! We encourage a sensory approach and for the children to follow their curiosity.

We also bring in the art and methods of other cultures. As with these Dorodangos. This is a traditional Japanese art from used for meditation.

Our children love to harvest the plants they've nurtured for months. They get a real sense of accomplishment which feeds an awe and wonder of our natural world.

We also work closely with our P.P.G, to enable lots of experiences to take place on our fabulous grounds, from Santa's grotto to spooky Halloween trails!
