Welcome to our Nursery!

Meet the team. Mrs Smith is the class teacher, Miss Nilon, Mrs Foster (Monday – Thursday) and Mrs McGoldrick (Friday) are the teaching assistants. Mr Haywood, who is our Outdoor and Early Years Specialist Teacher, also works in Nursery to provide cover for PPA and study time. Some weeks this will be with the children in Nursery and other weeks it will be with the children out in the woods.

As the Nursery year is the children’s first experience of school, we work hard to ensure that every day is engaging, stimulating and meaningful. The play based curriculum underpins all future learning by developing the children’s social and personal skills whilst building positive attitudes to learning.

The EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) is divided into three prime areas of learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

The four specific areas of learning are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design.

To allow children to develop in each of these areas, the provision in the classroom is enhanced and resourced on a regular basis in order for the children to explore and learn independently. Each session is managed by having a free flow policy where the children can choose to learn through play either inside or outside. This allows the children to have different experiences which still relate to the areas of learning. In addition, we have carpet time daily where we teach regular English, Maths, Phonics, PSHE, Science and Understanding of the World sessions throughout the week. The children will also undertake small focus group work with an adult in the setting relating to the taught sessions. Nursery has a PE session a week, which takes place in the school gym, as well as time to visit the ICT Suite, to borrow books from the library and to visit the school woods for Forest School sessions.

During the year we adventure through the topics:

Autumn 1: Why Am I Special?

Autumn 2: What Happened Once Upon A Time?

Spring 1: What happens in Wintertime?

Spring 2: Who could you ask for help?

Summer 1: How does your garden grow?

Summer 2: Where shall we go today?
