Sandal Primary School

Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

The Year 6 staff are a very passionate team and are extremely happy to be part of your child’s final year in their journey with Sandal.

6P is taught by Miss Mountain (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) and Mrs Williams (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and 6S is taught by Mrs Horsley. In addition, we are delighted to be supported by fantastic teaching assistants with us across the week who will be supporting and extending the children’s learning throughout the curriculum.

We are a very approachable team and if you have any queries or concerns please feel free to catch us for a quick chat, write a note to us in your child’s planner or contact the office to arrange an appointment.

We have many interesting learning experiences planned for the children as part of a creative, cross-curricular and engaging curriculum. Each term will be based around a topic that has been carefully chosen to cover the requirements of the National Curriculum. These are as follows –

Our Autumn Term’s focus is ‘Why did the World go to War?’ which is a hugely enjoyable topic.
Through the year, we will dip into a variety of high quality, engaging texts linked to our amazing topics and we have a vast range of books to get your teeth into. The children are immersed into the topic through reading “The Lion and the Unicorn”; by Shirley Hughes and our art journey is all linked around World War 2. The outdoor learning sessions will provide the children an opportunity to build an Anderson Shelter and make some food, which was eaten during this period.

The Spring Term theme is: ‘Echoes of the Past’. Within this topic, we focus on the Early Islamic Civilisation and the influence this period of time still has on our world today. This will be supported by two fabulous books by Saviour Pirotta and C.S Lewis: The Golden Horsemen of Baghdad and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. Alongside this, we will be focusing on building our locational knowledge and map reading skills.

During the Summer Term, Boy 87 is our chosen text and it is a gripping, uplifting tale of one boy’s struggle for survival; it echoes the story of young people all over the world today. This half term sees the children develop their awareness of refugees through the text and Refugee Week. It also provides the children with the opportunity to plan an event for a charity that supports refugees.

We are very much looking forward to what promises to be a fantastic year.
